Aquaponic Innovation

Mentari Kupang, Kedah

Description of Project

This innovation project was completed on February 28, 2024. This aquaponic location is next to  the building.

This aquaponic project is a food production system that combines aquaculture techniques  (breeding aquatic animals like fish in tanks), with hydroponics (planting trees in water) in a symbiotic  environment. We’re using a pumping system, a pump system and two water tanks.

IMPLEMENTATION

This aquaponic method works by flowing water from the pool through the filter to the storage  tank to filter out dirt. Next, from the tank water flows to the plant and water returns to the pool.

The water from the pond contains a good talapia fish feces that helps the vegetable growth. The  water that passes through the roots is also rich in oxygen that is useful to support the growth of the fish.

Fish pool water supplies insert anti-chlorine a few weeks before releasing the seeds. The seeds of  the talapia were released on 23 April 2024 at 140. So far, there are more than 100 survivors. The fishing officer from the FISHING DEPARTMENT in DAERAH BALING has come and given advice on this aquaponic fish pool.

The project is still new and this talapia fish is still not mature enough to sell. The vegetables  planted are also small.

DIFFICULTIES

  1. High cost of equipment and installation.
  2. Depending on the electricity problem, if there is a disruption of electricity supply over a long period of  time, the water circulation will be disrupted. It can cause fish and plants to die easily.
  3. It requires careful monitoring of water quality and requires special skills to control such equipment. CONDITION

What we learn

Need specific skill and effort to grow fish and vegetables.

Future plan

If the fish and vegetables are ripe enough, they can be sold or cooked.

Advice to other MENTARI

We suggest that if you want to try, learn about the necessary skills and deepen the science of aquaponics first  with the nearby Fishing Department so that the project is more structured and successful.
