Open Group Psychoeducation (OPEN)
Mentari Selayang, Selangor
Description of Project
Open Group Psychoeducation (OPEN) was first conducted at Mentari Selayang in 2023. This project aims to provide information and education about mental health to those waiting for their appointments to see a psychiatrist at Hospital Selayang. This initiative was introduced to offer educational interventions during the waiting period before seeing the doctor.
This psychoeducation program is held once a month in small groups not exceeding 10 participants, together with two facilitators. Topics discussed include self-care, stress management, communication skills, problem-solving, and other concepts based on ‘illness self-management.’ This group education provides self-care tips that can be learned before the clinic session with the doctor.
In 2024, the program was modified and opened to the public, and also promoted to nearby colleges and universities. The target audience for this program is the general public experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues. The program is held on weekends to facilitate the participation of more attendees. Two main topics were chosen for discussion. The 20 participants were divided into two groups and guided by experienced facilitators. The program exceeded initial expectations as it attracted participants from diverse backgrounds, including those from outside the Gombak district. The program started with a relaxation therapy session led by a medical therapist, followed by discussion sessions where participants were encouraged to share their personal experiences on the discussed topics. Although this program aims to provide information and education, it also functions as a support group for the participants. One of the challenges faced was ensuring discussions stayed on track, with facilitators responsible for steering the conversation back when it strayed.
This program allows participants to share experiences and inspire each other. With good guidance from the facilitators, it can also serve as a guide for other participants. Such programs are rare and should be held more frequently. In the future, Mentari Selayang intends to collaborate with peer support groups where this program will be driven by peers.
