Lighting the Way for a Stronger Community
Mentari Miri, Sarawak

Mentari Miri opened its doors in July 2019, brimming with hope. We had partnered with the Mental Health Association (MHA) of Sarawak, Miri Branch, setting up shop in their Rumah Kenyalang Miri Counselling Centre. This vibrant space, complete with a public gallery, consultation rooms and psychosocial rehabilitation area, was meant to be a haven for mental well-being.
Then came the pandemic, a brutal blow to our service. Things slowed down significantly in physical setting. Focus was shifted to online presence before resumption of service. Later on, we were forced to temporarily shutter our physical operations at Rumah Kenyalang and face a harsh reality – we were understaffed and couldn’t continue serving the community at that location. Around the same time, we received news that Rumah Kenyalang had changed hands. The new owner offered MHA a three-year window to solidify plans. But Mentari’s spirit wouldn’t be extinguished. While this presented a challenge, it also opened a door of opportunity.
Driven by unwavering determination, we began our search for a new home. Fate intervened through a chance encounter with the inspiring new management of MYY Mall, Lutong. This mall, once on the verge of closure, had been rescued by a team with a bold vision: to transform it into a bustling community hub. We saw a perfect alignment – their vision for the mall mirrored our mission for Mentari. This time, we weren’t just offering a nearly daily services; we were presented with a chance to truly contribute to the community’s well-being, hand-in-hand with MYY Mall’s vision.
The future for Mentari Miri at MYY Mall is bright. Imagine a space not just for consultations, but for workshops, support groups, and community events that break down stigma and foster open conversations about mental health. This collaboration allows us to reach a wider audience, providing crucial support and resources where people already gather and connect.
This is more than just finding a new location. It’s about resilience, shared purpose, and a renewed commitment to building a brighter future for mental health in Miri.
