Rehabilitation is a process designed to assist patients in their recovery. Various activities are planned for rehabilitation purposes, and Mentari Seremban also engages in multiple activities for this purpose, including green plant projects, Mentari Café, physical activities, indoor and outdoor games, and more. Mentari Seremban is also implementing a food sales variety project aimed at exposing patients to a diverse menu while preventing boredom from repetitive activities.
The food sales variety project at Mentari Seremban originated from discussions among members working within the Mentari and CPS units at Hospital Tuanku Jaafar Seremban. Mentari Café at Hospital Seremban operates periodically, open only on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This café project is fully managed by Mentari patients and supervised by one health care assistant and two work therapy assistants.
Before this food variety project, Mentari Seremban only sold three types of items: curry puffs, nasi lemak, and teh tarik. After implementing this project, Mentari Seremban began selling a wide range of foods with various options, such as tomato rice, oil rice, puri bread, sardine rolls, hot coffee, curry noodles, laksa, Bandung noodles, and more. The menu and recipes are sourced from Google, YouTube, and the combined ideas of all involved members.
The main menu at Mentari Café Seremban includes curry puffs, nasi lemak, teh tarik, and hot coffee. With the introduction of the food variety project, Mentari Seremban now offers new menus that change every two weeks. Some of the provided menus include Penang laksa, clam koey teow rice, wet fried noodles, puri bread, oil rice, corn fritters, nasi dagang, curry noodles, bihun soup, and others. Snack items include fried bread, sandwiches, fish balls, chicken balls, and seri muka cakes.
Mentari Café Seremban also creates opportunities for patients to sell their own items at the café. Some patients bring homemade yogurt to sell, with all profits going to the patients. Other patients sell items like batik cake and traditional cakes at Mentari Café.
To ensure the smooth execution of the project, regular meetings are held to ensure the project’s success, particularly in terms of financial resources, labor, food quality, and more. Nine Mentari patients are involved in this project, where they are trained in tasks such as washing chicken, cleaning rice, cooking rice, chopping chili, and packaging food. Patients are involved from start to finish, including selling food at the café area and using a mobile trolley to sell food around the psychiatric clinic area of Hospital Seremban.
In conclusion, despite some challenges in running the food sales variety project, such as time constraints and staffing shortages, the project continues to run to improve patient quality and aid in their recovery process. Recommendations for improvement include expanding the menu to offer more options, which could provide significant benefits if patients pursue careers in the food sector in the future.
