SANUBARI : an introduction of a psychological module as a recovery-based Intervention for  patients undergoing rehabilitation

SANUBARI is the Malay version of the Optimal Health Program (OHP) which is a wellness-based and self – management intervention .It was developed in St Vincent’s hospital, Australia .It  is a strength based recovery program that builds the capacity of its participants by guiding them to define health, identify their strength and vulnerabilities, enhancing support system, building strategies and health plans.

The SANUBARI modules consist of 5 topics :

Topic 1: Optimal Health

Topic 2: I can do model (Identifying stressor, strength and vulnerabilities)

Topic 3: Wellbeing factors

Topic 4: Changed enhancement, visioning and goal setting

Topic 5: Building health plans and maintaining well being

Implementation:

The program was conducted by three facilitators consisted of a psychiatrist, a medical officer and an occupational therapist . Patients were provided with a SANUBARI workbook The activity consists of 4 guided sessions (5 topics + 1 post intervention assessment) for four hours per each session. The sessions were conducted in a group and was done on a monthly basis ..The assessment used to measure patient’s outcome are number of  admission after 3 months , ability to return to work  and self-efficacy  score using the General Self-Efficacy (GSE) scale. This activity has shown positive outcome for each domain indicating the effectiveness. The total cost

for the whole activity was RM 500.00 which included expenses for food, materials and token for the patients.

Challenges:

There were some difficulty to maintain patient’s interest and motivation , thus the sessions were made to be more interactive by encouraging feedback,  using various types of materials and designing different activities for each session. “Chairobic” activity  were also introduced  and breaks were given in between activities or discussions Some patients required more time to understand the module and need to be guided individually. The long gap between sessions requires an additional time for patients to  recap the previous session before the new session starts.

Kesimpulan

SANUBARI  is a psychological module which can be introduce to other MENTARI as an added modality for recovery-based intervention apart from the usual rehabilitation activities. This would provide a more holistic approach in achieving recovery. It equips  patients with better self efficacy and the ability to achieve optimal health which is tailored to each individual patient.
