Sports and Mental Health

Mentari Selayang, Selangor

Description of Activities

Engaging in sports can improve the physical well-being and enhance the mental health of an individual. It also assists in the process of weight loss and reducing cholesterol levels, as well as decreasing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

At MENTARI Selayang, we conduct sports activities as one of the recreational therapies for patients. These activities are carried out regularly and involve patients from MENTARI Selayang, volunteers, and members of the local community.

These activities have been proven to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety. This is because exercising and participating in sports can lower the levels of stress hormones in a person’s body, namely adrenaline and cortisol. It can also increase the release of endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that act as hormones to enhance emotions, making us feel calm and happy.

Sports also train patients to be more social and interact with others, contributing to an increase in their self-confidence. Through activities like these, we hope to raise awareness in the community that individuals with mental health conditions can function like anyone else. Additionally, we aim to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and enable them to be accepted back into the community.
